organized by

Shambhunath Institute of Engineering & Technology, Allahabad
Computer Society of India, Allahabad Chapter
Computer Society of India -SIET Student Branch
27 January 2018

Seminar on Development & Application of High Precision GPS Measurement was organized by Shambhunath Institute of Engineering & Technology, Allahabad in association with Computer Society of India, Allahabad Chapter and CSI-SIET Student
 Branch on 27.01.2018.

Prof. Thomas Herring, Professor, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science Massachusetts Institute of Technology,  Cambridge, USA was Keynote Speaker.

Prof. K.K. Bhutani, Fellow, CSI was Chief Guest while Prof. Gulab Singh, Former, HoD, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, MNNIT and Dr. G.S. Darbari, Imm. Past President, EUPCCI were Guests of Honour on the occasion.

Programme started with the lighting of ceremonial lamp & Sarswati Vandana.

Prof. D.K. Dwivedi, Director (Capacity Building, CRC & Entrepreneurship) briefed participants about the topic of the Seminar & Global Positioning System (GPS)- a navigational system that utilizes satellite technology to determine with great
accuracy the location of any person or object and gave brief introduction of the Keynote Speaker and other invited guests present on the ocassion.

Dr. K.K. Tewari, Secretary, Utthan & Shambhunath Group of Institutions welcomed the guests by presenting floral bouquets, angvastram and mementoes. He also briefed guests and participants about the courses offered and milestones
achieved since the establishment of Shambhunath Group of Institutions.

Prof. K.K. Bhutani, Chief Guest delivered Presidential Address.  Prof. Gulab Singh & Dr. G.S. Darbari also addressed the participants and shared their view on fast increasing dependence on GPS in different application areas.

Prof. Thomas Herring delivered nice presentation covering wide spectrum of the development of global positioning system (GPS; scientific principles that make GPS possible; Applications of the GPS; Advantages of the GPS over other navigational
systems; Potential uses of the GPS. He explained how Geophysicists have applied the GPS since the mid-1980s to help monitor the slow but relentless deformation of the earth's crust in geologically active regions- changes that can eventually
cause the ground to rupture in an earthquake. For such investigations, they seek a maximum in precision from the GPS and often employ a technique called carrier tracking. Compared with differential GPS (which can locate a position to within
about a meter or so), carrier tracking allows locations to be determined to within a few millimeters. Meteorologists are measuring the delays in GPS signals caused by the atmosphere to aid in weather forecasting. GPS is more and more helping
to guide shins, airliners, helicopters, satellites and even passenger cars. Experimental systems carried in backpacks may eventually lead blind people about. Indeed, the commercial applications now far outnumber the military uses of the system.
Prof. Thomas also satisfied the queries of participants who took keen interest and made session very interactive.

In 52nd CSI Annual Convention held at Kolkatta from Jan.19-21, 2018, CSI Best Accredited Student Branch Award - Region-I was conferred to CSI Student Branch at Shambhunath Institute of Engineering & Technology, Allahabad. To celebrate the
